A Decade of Yeast

I have suffered on and off with yeast infections. There was a time I wondered what was wrong with me. Did other women suffer with yeast? Even though I knew that I was a clean person, I wondered if I was possibly not wiping right or maybe not showering correctly.

Yeast has a way of making us ashamed of ourselves. Television commercials tell us that our vaginas should smell good. The culture I come from advocates dry sex which basically involves using herbs and oils to dry out the vagina. This causes the male to feel more (especially if he is small). In my culture, there are names for women with watery vaginas.

Of course dry sex is ridiculous, but no culture admires yeast.

During the 90's I spent a lot of time worrying about whether I had AIDS because I knew that people with compromised immune systems often have lots of yeast infections.

I spent lots of money on monistat in those days. The infection would go away then come back right after my period. My life was touched by yeast that whole decade.

Candida Doth Torment Me

Candida Albicans bacteria must have awareness. Those little yeast-causing creatures must know that all it takes for my life to fall apart is for me to wake up with the signs of yeast infection. You know what I mean. Cottage-cheese like discharge accompanied by an itch that cannot be relieved by any amount of scratching.

Where do these creatures come from? It turns out that the vagina has many species of bacteria that live there and help to keep the vaginal environment healthy. However, when the vaginal environment changes, the bacteria that keep us healthy grow lower in numbers while the yeast-causing becomes more Basically, they get a little too big for their britches, and the result sometimes they get a little to big for their britches and decide to breed like crazy.

Yeast to live on the moist surfaces of our bodies, such as our mouths and vaginas. You mostly hear about vaginal yeast because it is so prevalent. The discovery and development of antibiotics, although a boon for medicine, also increases the likelihood of developing a yeast infection. Other factors besides antibiotics that cause yeast infections include

• Wearing tight clothing
• Not properly drying after a bath
• Not bathing enough
• Taking oral contraceptives
• Vaginal intercourse with inadequate lubrication
• Feminine hygiene sprays
• Douching
• Steroid medicines
• Greasy foods

All of us have been guilty of the above cardinal sins. The good news is that by avoiding some of these practices, we decrease our chances of having recurring yeast infections.

Getting Rid of the Nasty Yeast

What do you do if no matter how many Monistats you use, you still get yeast infections?

Monistat anti-fungal agents act as Bandaids. They mask the symtoms but do not address the root of the infection. A yeast infection is a sign that something is wrong internally.

In order to bring the body back into natural balance, you need to

  • Eliminate the 'on the surface' symptoms.
  • Make specific dietary changes and optimize digestion.
  • Strengthen your immune system and provide your body with the nutritional force it needs to heal itself.
